The future transformation of museums
White paper · 2026 · English · Future Museum, Phase III (2024–2026)
Intro
Museums and science centres are navigating a period of profound transformation. Economic instability, technological acceleration, environmental disruption, political uncertainty and social fragmentation are reshaping how cultural institutions operate and what society expects of them. What makes this moment distinctive is not any single trend, but the convergence of several forces acting at once.
Phase III of the Future Museum research programme brought 44 institutions from 18 countries and four continents through three interconnected eight-month research sprints, using strategic foresight, speculative design, scenario exploration, benchmarking and collective reflection. This white paper sets out what the cohort found: six interconnected Red Threads, and the strategic pathways that open from them.
